Christianity in India dates back to more than 2000 years, when for the first time, St.Thomas, a disciple of Jesus, visited the present day Kerala and started propagating Christianity. The religion which began its journey in the state of Kerala has around 24 million followers in the country now, with some of the states such as Goa, Kerala, Tamilnadu having a majority of Christian population. Some of them are Buddhism, Jainism, Parsisim and some of the not very unknown cults such as Din-Illahi. Most of the religions either perished or have very little presence in the country now. India has a maximum share of population divided between three religions Hinduism, Islam and Christianity.
The principles of Christianity have been adored and adapted by the Indians for a very long time. Till date, most of the religious conversions happen from the other religions to Christianity. Now more than 3% of Indians are Christians. But this is according to the official estimates. The weaker sections of the people who adapted Christianity as their religion were offered some sops by the Government of India. For that reason they show on record that they belong to a particular caste in Hinduism. But at heart they always were and are practicing Christianity. So the number increases significantly when we add these people to the records. Though this success of the Christianity could be attributed to the preachers of the religion, there is more to it than meets the eye.
The success of Christianity lies in the fact that the principles of Christianity have been imbibed in to the life of considerable number of people and they follow them to verbatim in their lives. This adaptation of the religion was done by the people because they identified themselves with the principles of the religion. They blended their culture and way of life with the principles of Christianity and created a new sect of Christianity called Indian Christians.
In India, at the very start of the civilization, people divided themselves according to the job that they discharged. The civilization developed thereof and with that the heredity and the dexterity at the job. With it developed the caste system which categorized the sections of the society according to the work they did. The problem started from this caste system. This caste system has brought different priorities to the different castes, obviously more priority went to the sections that contributed much toward the economy, education and administration. The remaining sections were neglected and thus they remained secluded from the development.
Slowly the discrimination against these sections started taking its root. As the domination of the stronger sections of the society increased, the discrimination raised. It increased to such an extent that the weaker sections are not only excluded from the development, they were also devoid of the social treatment and most of the time they were treated as slaves. It’s exactly then that they found some respite in the Christian principles. The equality of treatment and the principles of god as one attracted them. They slowly learnt the Christian philosophy, understood the values and began their lives as Christians. And not only the underprivileged sections, many people from other sections also identified themselves with the philosophy of Christianity and adapted the same
But most importantly the success of the Christianity is because of the fact that Christianity has a very rich history of empathizing with people. They have a very splendid culture of understanding the needs of the society and responding to them. For example they understand the importance of education in the society. They always strive towards the advancement of the society with inclusive growth. Many missionary schools in every nook and corner of the country stand as a vindication to the fact that the community strives towards the development of the society.
